Police are investigating a fatal stabbing of a 37-year-old man in Mount Vernon.

City officials said it happened near Union Avenue and East 3rd Street on Thursday around 10:20 p.m.

Officials said the victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification, but News 12 has learned that the man was transported to the hospital due to multiple stab wounds.

He succumbed to his injuries and no suspects are in custody, according to city officials.

Jesse Van Lew, a community advocate, told News 12 that he's calling on city leaders to step up and make a change.

"When is enough going to be enough in the city... The community is concerned. The city is not safe. As I said in my last message, the leadership has to take control and do something about it," Van Lew said.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard issued a statement to News 12, reminding residents that violence has no place in her city.

Anyone with information about the fatal stabbing is asked to contact Mount Vernon police. All calls will be kept confidential.

People can also submit an anonymous tip using the Text-a-Tip line by texting "MVPD" and your tip to 847411.
