NYPD: Suspect faces attempted murder, 5 other charges for shooting officer
The NYPD says a 31-year-old
officer was shot near White Plains Road Tuesday night.
Commissioner Dermot Shea
says dozens of officers from the Gun Violence Suppression Division were driving
on Lafayette Avenue near White Plains Road at around 10:30 p.m. when they
encountered Ajani J. Jones, 24, and initiated a stop.
then took off running. That’s when police say one officer shot one round, and Jones
shot four rounds.
say during that exchange of gunfire, the officer was struck one time in the
lower back, below his bulletproof vest.
12 is told that the suspect eventually laid on the ground and surrendered.
The suspect's firearm was
recovered, according to Commissioner Shea. Police say Jones is in custody at
this time. News 12 is told he has been arrested numerous times in New York City
and New Jersey.
It’s unclear if the officers
were investigating the suspect for another shooting.
Commissioner Shea says the
31-year-old is a six-and-a-half-year veteran with the NYPD.

assault in the first degree, felony assault for assaulting an officer, two
charges of criminal possession of a weapon and loaded gun, and criminal
possession of a stolen weapon.
