Police say there was a shooting in Mount Vernon on Friday.

It happened on West Third Street between Ninth and 10th avenues just before noon in front of a deli.

Mount Vernon officials say a 30-year-old man was shot multiple times and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown as of Friday night.

The area is minutes away from Levister Towers, where 14-year-old Zyaire Fernandez was fatally shot last month.

This incident is the latest in a string of shootings the city has seen in recent months.

Robert Carter is the Program Manager at SNUG, which stands for Stand up Against Guns.

"Our mission is to reduce gun violence every year by at least 50% whether as victims or homicides," Carter said

When SNUG heard that a man was shot multiple times, someone from the team was on the scene at South 9th Avenue and West Third and then at the hospital with the victim.

"That's one of the biggest things that we do here is mediations. Mediations help to stop retaliation," Carter added.

Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard said shootings are happening not just in her city but nationwide because of the high accessibility to guns.

"It's not just policing issue, it's a job training, it's a mental health, it's a community engagement, it's a violence interruptions, it's a public health, and public safety response that we have to find," she said.

Patterson-Howard said she is committed to keep looking for solutions against gun violence.

"I'm looking to work with my co- elected officials as well as our community our faith-based community our neighborhoods associations. Our businesses, our school districts to really find concrete solutions to addressing the challenges," she added.

There was no word on a suspect or suspects in this case as of Friday night.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
