Police say an NYPD lieutenant shot and injured a gun-wielding man early Sunday morning in Fordham Heights.
Officials say it happened at around 3 a.m. at the intersection of Marion Avenue and 188th Street. Two officers dressed in plainclothes and a lieutenant heard gunshots as they were on Webster Avenue. They reached Marion Avenue and they found a suspect with a gun in his hand.
Police say the lieutenant got out of his unmarked car, identified himself to the suspect and ordered him to drop his weapon. That's when the suspect turned around and allegedly pointed the gun at the lieutenant.
The lieutenant fired five times in response. The suspect then fled, but was stopped down the street.
The 23-year-old suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and was taken to Saint Barnabas Hospital.
Officers searched nearby buildings and spoke to owners of a deli and insurance shop to try to piece together what transpired.
Police say charges against the unidentified suspect are pending.
