Police: Thieves target cars in Piermont
A rash of car thefts in Piermont has continued unabated despite arrests and an increased focus on the problem by police.
Police say the suspects are honing in on cash and electrical gadgets such as cell phones, GPS devices and laptop computers.
In June, Piermont cops found more than $1,000 on two teens from Central Nyack, who were then arrested in connection with a car theft. Police say, however, that different thieves have sprung up. They are asking the public to use caution.
"It?s very important that people take their valuables, they secure them and they bring them in the house at the end of the day and lock their cars," says Chief Michael O'Shea of the Ramapo Police Department.
Steve Brennan, who lives on Crescent Road, says he has long left his van unlocked until he was recently victimized. He now plans on changing his habits, as do others in the neighborhood.
?We always felt that we were totally safe, it's a dead-end street,? says Brennan. ?But now we do lock our cars at night and our doors so I guess you can say we're taking precautions."
Police say there was one larceny Thursday preceded by at least six Monday.
