A Yorktown man who allegedly drove drunk in a wrong-way crash on Route 9 in Peekskill has been charged with causing a fatal accident.
New York State Police say Mark Cope, 41, of Yorktown, was allegedly driving drunk around 9 p.m. Wednesday when he got on Route 9 in Peekskill, heading the wrong way. They say his Audi smashed through an Acura while going north on the southbound side of the road near Main Street.
There were three people in the Acura. The driver who was killed was identified as 32-year-old Shina McClam of Ossining. Her 6-year-old daughter and 18-year-old niece suffered serious injuries that aren’t life-threatening.
Peekskill and Montrose fire departments, as well as the county Medical Examiner's Office, were on the scene.
Cope was charged with first-degree vehicular manslaughter at his arraignment and is being held in the county jail on $100,000 bail. He is due back in court next Tuesday.
