The Catholic News Agency says that Pope Leo XIV has appointed the next archbishop of New York to succeed Cardinal Timothy Dolan.

It says that Bishop Ronald Hicks, of the Diocese of Joliet in Illinois, was chosen for the position.

The 58-year-old will succeed Dolan, who has led NY since 2009.

Hicks has led the Diocese of Joliet since September 2020.

The Archdiocese of New York serves Catholics in the boroughs of Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, and in seven counties to the north.
