Port Chester has indefinitely postponed its March elections after a judge ruled the village unfairly disenfranchises Hispanic voters.

"It would be a waste of taxpayers' money to continue something that was found invalid," said Port Chester Mayor Dennis Pilla.

The village is currently examining other methods, such as a cumulative voting system.

Longtime Port Chester resident Caesar Ruiz filed the federal suit. A judge ruled the village violated section two of the Voting Rights Act by making it difficult for Latinos to fully take part in the electoral process.

"We have to face reality," said resident Norma Freeman. "Port Chester is not one big happy family. We are divided and we have to realize that so we can work to bridge the [gap]."
