The Port Jervis School District will no longer be called the Raiders starting this summer, following a mandate from the State Education Department last January.
The decision was made due to the name's connections to Indigenous people. The district will phase out the name and logo after June 30.
According to Superintendent John Bell, emotions are still raw regarding the state's decision, and there are ongoing lawsuits related to the issue.
A new team name has yet to be chosen.
New 12 previously reported on the district's joint calls with other public schools to the state to keep their team names.
