A man who asked to be shot and pointed a gun at Poughkeepsie police officers Friday was hospitalized for a mental health check.

Police say officers were responding to a parking complaint on Smith Street when the individual approached them.

He began to walk away after a brief conversation and requested that the officers shoot him in the back.

As he continued to walk, he pointed an object that appeared to be a handgun at the officers.

Police proceeded to apprehend and disarm him. They determined that the object he had pointed was a replica gun.

Authorities say the man has been charged with menacing and obstructing governmental administration.
