Federal cuts to health programs
Gov. Kathy Hochul recently announced that New York will see over $300 million in cuts to state Health Department programs as a result of rollbacks at the federal level.
Late last month, the Department of Health and Human Services abruptly canceled more than $12 billion in federal grants for infectious diseases, mental health services and addiction treatment.
New York lost funding for things such as virus surveillance, outbreak response, infection prevention in hospitals, and support to local health departments.
The state Office of Addiction Services and Supports expects to lose $40 million, which will result in cuts to addiction, prevention and treatment support. The state Office of Mental Health will likely lose $27 million.
New York State Association of County Health Officials Executive Director Sarah Ravenhall said the state is already feeling the cuts.
"We are certainly very concerned about the impact that this will have on our broader health system across New York state," she said.
