Preparations are underway to bring the body of a Virginia police officer home to Walden after he was shot and killed in the line of duty.
Virginia Police Officer Dominic "Nick" Winum answered his final call to duty last Friday when authorities say the married father of four and grandfather was shot and killed in his patrol car during a traffic stop.
One week later, the Walden native, who village police say graduated from Valley Central High School, will return home one last time.
Walden police, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and state police will be among the multiple law enforcement agencies meeting Virginia State Police Friday at the Pennsylvania-New York border, to transport Winum's casket to Millspaugh Funeral Home ahead of his burial Saturday.
That route will take them down I-84 to Montgomery and along Route 208 in Walden.
Winum's family released this statement thanking supporters on a GoFundMe page for the officer, saying, "Nick is remembered for his infectious smile, integrity, and love for his community. As a devout Christian he shared the love of Christ with all he came in contact with."
