As candidates for state and federal positions face off in political primaries tomorrow, some are expected to be much closer than others.

In the Republican primary for governor, Carl Paladino has caught up with Rick Lazio and the race is now too close to call, according to the latest polls.

In one of the Republican races for U.S. Senate, David Malpass, a former Bear Sterns economist, will face off against former Nassau County lawmaker Bruce Blakeman and former Rep. Joe DioGuardi, of Ossining. The winner will face Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) in the general election to fill the remainder of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?s six-year term.

Two other Republicans are facing off in hopes of running against Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) in November. Former CIA agent Gary Bernstein is running against Jay Townsend, who is a resident of Cornwall.

Polls will open tomorrow at 6 a.m. and turnout is expected to be higher than in recent years.
