New York lawmakers have come up with a plan that would lower gas prices for Bronx drivers and drivers across the state.
If approved, a new bill would save drivers approximately $450 million each year. The proposed bill would eliminate state tax on the portion of gas that is more than $2 a gallon. The bill would also give local governments the option of capping or lowering local sales tax on gas.
Critics of the plan say this would only provide short-term relief for the long-term problem of oil dependence. Legislative leaders say both the Assembly and Senate are expected to pass the bill next week. Governor Pataki (R-NY) has yet to say whether he will approve it. If passed, the bill would take effect June 1.
