Protesters rallied outside of the Orange County Emergency Services Center in Goshen Thursday evening as a legislative hearing was held on resolutions regarding permits for the Millennium pipeline.
Lawmakers were expected to vote on two resolutions calling on the state to pursue legal options after the federal government pushed through permits denied by the state.
The permits are needed to fuel a billion-dollar natural gas power plant in Wawayanda owned by Competitive Power Ventures.
Activists say the project, expected to be completed next year, was pushed through by corruption and will have serious health and environmental impacts. "The hope is the state will get the message that Orange County is not going to roll over and become a sacrifice zone without fighting back,” said Wawayanda resident Pramilla Mallick.
"Every legislator is concerned about the corruption in the governor's office with some of his closest advisors,” said Orange County Legislative Chairman Steve Brescia. “We're all concerned about the environment, but at the end of the day - the facility is built."
Despite the protesters’ efforts, Brescia said that he's not sure what, if anything, these resolutions would accomplish if passed.
