Bronx tenants gathered Tuesday to protest a bill they say will deteriorate tenants' rights.
The rally was held in front of Councilwoman Maria Baez's office. Organizers of the protest say Baez is proposing legislation that will allow landlords to sue for tenant harassment. Critics feel the bill will help landlords evict low-income tenants so higher rent can be instituted.
"I think it may be partly because her term is limited," says Bronx resident Gloria Poe. "She's looking for a higher office ? looking for who her contributors will be."
A statement from Baez's office says the councilwoman is still in the first step of the legislative process and the public will have an opportunity to be heard. Representatives from her office have offered to meet with protestors, but tenants say they want support and not a compromise.
