Quick response stops chimney fire from spreading at Brewster home
The call was reported around 6:50 a.m. at a residence located at 2297 Route 6.
A fast response by fire crews prevented a chimney fire from spreading at a single‑family home along Route 6 in Brewster early this morning.
The call for a chimney fire came in just before 6:30 a.m., according to officials with the Brewster Fire Department.
When crews arrived, smoke was already visible and flames had begun to spread into the walls of the home.
“When we got on location I found a moderate smoke condition with a little bit of fire coming through the walls,” said Daniel Rubin, second assistant chief with the Brewster Fire Department. “At that point I upgraded the alarm and called for mutual aid.”
Firefighters from Brewster, Carmel and Lake Carmel responded, with state troopers assisting with traffic control along Route 6.
About 25 firefighters worked together to extinguish the fire. Officials said the home suffered only minor damage.
Rubin credited the outcome to the quick response and the stone construction of the chimney.
“No combustible materials were involved, and the fire was contained to the chimney,” Rubin said. “Luckily we got here quick enough to contain it to the chimney without it spreading to the rest of the house.”
Rubin said a buildup of soot appears to have caused the fire, though homeowners reported that the chimney had been cleaned.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, chimneys should be cleaned annually if used once or twice a week, with heavier use requiring more frequent cleanings.
No injuries were reported.
