Protesters gathered Wednesday night as former President Donald Trump arrived in Mamaroneck for a gala in his honor.
Outside the golden gates of Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, a rally was held against the tribute banquet for Trump.
Trump has been a member of the private golf club for more than 50 years. The gala was reportedly hosted by Ted Virtue, a Winged Foot member and Trump supporter.
Protesters say they worry they could be fundraising for election audits or for re-election in 2024.
“Most importantly, I'm here because of the visceral feeling I have that what he's doing is dangerous for America…he's raising money for a cause that's hopeless,” says Steven Ludsin, an activist from Scarsdale.
While Trump has been forcibly quieted on social media, he hasn't been completely out of public consciousness as the commission on the Capitol riots continues.
“He is being normalized, and his behavior is being normalized in the form of a celebration—a man who is responsible for an insurrection, an attack against the American government,” says Shannon Powell, the founder of the group Indivisible Westchester.
The protesters aimed to send a message as guests arrived that Trump is not welcome in their neighborhood. The protesters were met with honks of approval, though Trump's supporters showed up as well.
