Recovery efforts are underway for dozens of families following a massive apartment building fire that left one person dead and several injured.
Victims from the 95-unit Mona Lisa complex at 671 Bronx River Road were brought across the street to the Scotti Park Community Center to begin picking up the pieces of their lives.
Red Cross volunteers and Yonkers city officials are working to provide emergency housing, food, and health services to more than 70 families.
They are also finding hotels for people to stay in for the time being. "They've been working really hard to support these residents who have been displaced and who have been dealing with so much," says Michael de Vulpillieres, of the American Red Cross in the Greater New York.
While there was a great deal of damage to the six-story building, firefighters have been able to escort people in and out so they could at least grab personal belongings.
The fire started about 1 a.m. on Wednesday in a first-floor apartment and quickly traveled up the building and through the roof.
More than 100 firefighters worked the scene. It took about seven hours for them to get the fire under control. A 67-year-old man on the fourth floor lost his life in the fire while many other residents and first responders were injured.
It's been a rough time for everyone here. "I've lived here since I was 17, it's home. You know every time you mess up? You go home to your mom and dad, this is mom and dad. This has been my house you know, and it just sucks to see all the families who lived here going through it," says resident Nicole Green.
No information has been released about the man who died.
The exact cause of the fire has also not been released yet but investigators say it was accidental.
