Residents jump from second floor to escape flames in White Plains

Several families were left homeless when a fire destroyed their home in White Plains Tuesday morning.

Several families were left homeless when a fire destroyed their home in White Plains Tuesday morning.
Flames broke out at the home at 140 Hale Ave. shortly after 8 a.m. Video from Chopper 12 shows heavy damage to the upper floors of the structure.
Residents tell News 12 some of their neighbors had to jump from a second-story window to escape the flames. They say six people had to be taken to the hospital, including one person who injured their leg jumping from the second floor. Their injuries ranged from smoke inhalation to burns.
Four firefighters were taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
They say four cats were also injured.
In addition to White Plains firefighters, calls went out to surrounding communities for mutual aid.
The cause of the fire has not been released yet.
