News 12 is fielding complaints from residents in New Windsor who live near a stalled school construction project that they say is an “eyesore.”

The complaints pertain to the grounds of the New Windsor School on Quassaick Avenue after several trees were removed last year to make way for a new building and a fence was put up.

The school is in the Newburgh Enlarged City School District.

The project will add air conditioning to the existing building, provide additional square footage for student instruction, including a gym and change the bus loop at the rear of the school, according to a district spokesperson, Cassie Skarlz.

Skarlz gave News 12 documents showing the $20 million project was approved by a capital bond vote and is about seven months behind after they fired their general contractor.

The New Windsor supervisor says the town has also been fielding complaints but that they no say or involvement when it comes to school district projects.

“I got a fence up. It looks terrible. There’s dirt piles and there’s no absolute answers. I don’t want a half-done project,” says Steven Bedetti. “The projects that we control in New Windsor, we are on top of.”

Skarlz wouldn’t say why the original contractor was removed.

According to the documents sent, a new contractor was hired in March and the project is expected to be finished next summer.
