A retired Sullivan County judge will not serve jail time in the reckless driving deaths of two teenage friends.
Isaac Kantrowitz, 87, was sentenced Thursday to pay a $1,000 fine and a mandatory $88 surcharge.
Kantrowitz was speeding when he struck and killed the 14-year-old and 16-year-old in 2019.
The judge chose not to impose the maximum sentence, which included 60 days in jail.
Kantrowitz is now prohibited from obtaining a driver's license.
Prosecutors say the tragic case exposes serious inadequacies in state law when it comes to vehicular deaths.
