Fencing is a sport that can build confidence and sharpen your mind — and there's an academy in Westchester teaching athletes of all ages this fast-paced Olympic sport.
Westchester Fencing Academy in Hawthorne has been around for more than 20 years, coaching at local, regional, and national levels. Coaches say anyone can start fencing, regardless of experience, and all equipment is provided for beginners.
"It doesn't really take much experience to get started in fencing. It just takes some practice," says Coach Peter Agatonovic.
The academy offers instruction in saber, the quickest and lightest of the weapons, and emphasizes safety with full protective gear. Students say fencing is not only physical but mental.
"I like fencing because you use your mind a lot and you need to be a fast thinker," says Viviana, a student.
