A road trip for two young people took a deadly turn when their car crashed, went airborne and sent them to a watery grave in Tuxedo.
State police say a bicyclist spotted the vehicle early Monday morning while riding through Harriman State Park. Authorities say 23-year-old Matthew LaFrancois was at the wheel and his 19-year-old girlfriend, Brittany Duggan, was his passenger. According to officials, the couple was traveling on Route 106 from Duggan's Warwick home to LaFrancois' West Haverstraw home. Police say LaFrancois lost control of the Ford Bronco and hit some boulders, sending the vehicle flying into Lake Kanawauke about 3 a.m. Saturday. The young couple drowned in the Bronco, which landed upside down.
Police say Route 106 is poorly lit, narrow and winding. They also say it's not a well-traveled roadway. Investigators are unsure whether speed was a factor. They are awaiting toxicology reports.
