Asthma and fatigue are just a few problems some Rockland Community College employees hoped to address, but a county attorney blocked their efforts.

"From September, October, November, December of 2007 I had sinus infections constantly," said employee Renee Jersey. "My doctor didn't know what to do for me. He put me on the highest antibiotic."

Jersey and others work in Daniel T. Brucker Hall. She said she found mold under the carpets in her office.

The co-workers recently showed up to a public meeting to voice their complaints to the Rockland County Legislature, but an attorney retained by the county stopped them in their tracks.

"It's a matter that needs to be looked at thoroughly before there can be any public comment," lawyer Kevin Plunkett said at the meeting. Lawmakers agreed, effectively putting off the meeting.

"I'm really upset because that means people will be in that building until they decide to address it and that is a serious health issue," said Jersey.

The health department has performed numerous studies at Brucker Hall, but the results have been inconclusive. Nine workers' compensation cases are pending, so the county would not comment on the matter.
