After numerous complaints about the Masjid Darul Ehsan Mosque in Suffern, neighbors are finally seeing the piles of trash disappearing.
Fire inspectors toured the mosque and found out-of-date fire extinguishers and broken emergency lighting.
The Department of Health recently issued a notice of violation over the trash issue and Suffern Mayor Dagan LaCorte said that unless the issues were resolved, the building could be shut down.
Officials say the mosque is involved in a power struggle between its two owners and may end up being sold. Because of the dispute, trash had not been disposed of and health and safety maintenance was not being done.
The attorney representing the owners said that they are doing everything they can to cooperate and resolve the issues.
