County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef announced Thursday that he will not sign a resolution to ban the N-word and other derogatory terms. ?I don't sign on with the notion of ?banning? particular words,? said Vanderhoef, who also will not veto the bill. ?I sign on with the issue of educating about the history of our country.? The announcement has little effect on the resolution, says William Darden, the legislation?s co-sponsor. Because Vanderhoef will not veto the bill, it will go into effect as planned.?We can educate our citizens on the history of the word, and I believe it will be a far better answer than government?s overuse of its legislative power with the regulation of speech,? Vanderhoef said in a release. The County Executive says the banning of any word is not in the legislature?s duty.
