Even though the weather was unpleasant, students put down their car keys and opted to ride their bikes to school on Friday in protest of the rising cost of gas.

?We picked a date, we stuck to it,? Anthony Licandro, a student at Clarkstown H.S. South says. ?The rain?s cool, nice exercise, it?s really fun.?

Licandro and a group of his fellow students decided to ride their bikes to school in hopes that conserving fuel will help lower gas prices. ?We?re hoping to conserve some gas and maybe draw attention so that they lower gas prices,? Kayla Braca, a student, says. ?Even a little bit.?

More than 250 students and faculty members at the school participated in the event. Most rode their bikes to school, but others opted for scooters or simply walked. The school?s track team jogged to school.

The event was organized by Mike McQuillan, a senior. McQuillan named the event ?Tour de South,? a spoof of the ?Tour de France.?
