Rockland lawmakers held a moment of silence Monday afternoon for Haiti and its assassinated president Jovenel Moise.
Moise was killed last Wednesday inside his own home.
Since then, 17 suspects have been arrested, including the people who authorities believe orchestrated the attack, and three others were killed.
Spring Valley has a significant Haitian population, which sparked the show of support.
"I want Haiti and its people to know peace, which is why I was encouraged by President Biden's decision to heed my call to redesignate Haiti as TPS or temporary protective status," says Rep. Mondaire Jones, of the 17th District.
"Together we stand strong to let the world know that we will get by this no matter what," said Spring Valley Village Trustee Eudson Tyson Francois.
As Haiti tries to figure out what's next, the U.S. is sending a delegation team to help stabilize the situation.
