Rockland County is trying to learn its lesson from flooding caused by last year?s nor?easter.

Only 2 to 4 inches of rain is expected to come with the two incoming storms, but officials say it's not just how much rain that falls, but how quickly. The Clarkstown Department of Public Works cleaned out culverts Friday. On Klein Avenue, the Department of Environmental Control has brought in special pumps to drain the lakes.

Officials learned the hard way last year that the area is highly susceptible to flooding when 27 people had to be evacuated after heavy rains last April.

Fire and emergency services are also doing their part by handing out flyers with flood safety tips to residents in flood-prone areas. Residents are advised to learn the safest route from their home in case they have to evacuate. Secondly, they should practice an escape plan for the family and pick a meeting place if anyone gets separated. Lastly, residents should make an itemized list of valuables for possible flood insurance claims.
