People hitting the roads for Labor Day hit a snag Friday after a rollover accident on the New York State Thruway brought traffic to a halt.
According to police, a southbound Dodge Neon flipped over a guard rail between exits 12 and 11. Police say the driver was apparently cut off by another vehicle. The driver was taken to Nyack Hospital with minor neck injuries.
The small accident gave rubberneckers a reason to stare and jam up both sides of the highway. Even side roads, such as Route 59 in Nanuet, were slammed with cars and trucks during normally quiet hours.
According to AAA, almost 29 million Americans will drive to their holiday destinations. Last year, nearly 3 million vehicles traveled more than 97 million miles along the New York State Thruway on Labor Day weekend. State police are promising extra patrols. They say they will be watching out for speeders, aggressive drivers and drunken drivers. To view footage of the crash, go to channel 612 on your iO digital cable box and click on iO Extra.
