The New York State Consumer Protection Board is warning Throgs Neck and Bronx Con Edison customers to beware of a scam that could leave them paying higher bills.

Officials say the suspects go door-to-door wearing Con Edison badges and uniforms promising to save customers money. Several Throgs Neck residents gave the suspects their bills, only to later be charged for services they did not ask for. Con Edison officials say the suspects are not their employees, adding they may work for an Energy Service Company (ESCO). However, ESCO workers are not authorized to wear Con Edison uniforms or sign energy customers up for services not approved by Con Ed.

The NY State Consumer Protection Board advises homeowners not to give their bills or personal information to anyone who comes to their door.
