Bedbugs can certainly wreak havoc on homes, but local residents should be wary of scam artists trying to profit off of the epidemic.
An insect or two does not necessarily mean there's an infestation. If it seems like the pests have truly moved in, officials say homeowners should make sure to find an exterminator with the proper certifications. The Better Business Bureau recommends finding a company that is a member of a local or national trade organization.
Homeowners should also be wary of door-to-door exterminators who show up claiming there's an infestation in the neighborhood. They could just be looking for quick cash.
