News 12 has learned that a child was hit by a school bus Thursday in Monsey, according to a school official.

The incident is the latest in a string of similar accidents have happened in the Town of Ramapo since the beginning of the year.

In January, an 8-year-old was killed in New Square and in February, a 5-year-old was killed in Spring Valley. In March, a 6-year-old boy was hit by a school bus in Monsey.

The most recent incident happened at drop off on Maple Avenue and Monsey Boulevard.

An East Ramapo Central School District official told News 12 the incident involved a student and bus from a private school.

All of the bus accidents are a concern for local officials in the community.

Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht says he contacted the East Ramapo school district Thursday after what happened to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

“While the town has no official role in mandating or supervising the bus operation, {we want} to take an active part in working with the district to ensure the safety of all children in our community,” Specht says.

The supervisor went on to say he called a meeting with East Ramapo administration, the heads of private schools and the police chief after the last tragedy to intervene. He says there’s a need for enhanced bus driver training and educational outreach to students about pedestrian and bus safety.

So far, it’s not clear what measures are being discussed – but community members say, clearly – something needs to be done.

News 12 reached out to Ramapo police several times for information on this latest accident and an update on the others but hasn’t heard back.
