Crews continued scouring the woods of Harriman State Park Wednesday in search of a small plane that may have gone down.
So far, no wreckage has been found. Officials are now looking into whether the plane may have been doing training exercises Monday night when eyewitnesses saw smoke in the sky.
Rockland Fire Coordinator Gordon Wren says another possible theory is a plane carrying oil tanks used for skywriting may have had the tanks on without realizing it.
"Something unusual happened, there's no doubt about it," Wren says. "We're just not sure what."
Police are planning to carry on the search using helicopters Thursday morning.
