Souped-up cars with noisy mufflers are causing headaches for some Hudson Valley residents, but there may soon be a state law that could help.

Matthew Orefice, of Yonkers, lives just a few blocks from Central Avenue, which is known for drag racing.

He says the startling noises are affecting every family member, including Penelope the potbelly pig.

"The pig gets very jumpy. It's not like Fourth of July, where she jumps all over the place, but those loud bangs scare pets," he says.

Sen. Shelley Mayer, who represents the area, cosponsored the SLEEP Act, an acronym for Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution.

The SLEEP Act would outlaw the sale and installation of devices that make vehicle and motorcycle mufflers louder.

It would also increase the fine from $150 to $1,000.

"People have begged us throughout the state to do something about this problem," says Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

With the approval of both state houses, it's now up to the governor to sign the legislation into law.

The bill heads to the governor's office as Westchester County works on another solution.

The county budgeted funds to launch a noise camera pilot program to ticket drivers with noisy mufflers by snapping a picture of their license plates. It's unclear how soon that program will launch.
