Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing to get work started as soon as possible on transforming parts of Memorial Highway in New Rochelle into a green space.

Last week, Schumer and Rep. Jamaal Bowman secured the $12 million necessary to start construction on the LINC Project.

The project will reconnect 25,000 residents to downtown, add easier access to public transportation and boost the local economy.

Memorial Highway and the unfinished construction of I-95 have cut off entire neighborhoods from jobs and businesses since the 1950s. Schumer hopes this will bring equity to the city.

Schumer says the goal is "to help reconnect the communities and afford the residents who live in the neighborhoods the economic opportunity they deserve and need."

Groundbreaking is expected to begin in 2023.
