A police sergeant who is a candidate for chief in Montgomery is facing scrutiny - now that an attorney is coming forward with a claim of police brutality.

Montgomery Police Sgt. John Hank is one of six of candidates now being considered for the department’s top job as Montgomery police chief.

Merrick Dammar, who lives in town and is an immigration attorney in the Bronx, says Hank should be demoted and investigated - not elevated.

Dammar says he witnessed Hank racially profile and brutalize his friend a decade ago after Hank accused the 70-year-old Black Muslim of speeding.

“Spun my friend around, put him in handcuffs, took out a Taser and placed it directly on the temple of my friend – skin to plastic," says Dammar.

Supervisor Brian Maher says the town was never made aware of the allegations a decade ago and that the incident records from that day are now lost.

Dammar disagrees and says he reported the incident then – as he is now - to the department and town.

Hank denied the allegations and said, "Public service has been my life’s work. I am proud of my service to this town and know that this false accusation cannot take away from the positive impact I have made.”

Despite the allegations, Hank is still being considered for the job.

Acting Police Chief Jon VanTassel says Dammar's remarks are inconsistent with previous statements but that they are taking the accusations seriously.
