Supermarkets
across the Hudson Valley will be busy today, as last-minute shoppers rush to get all those Thanksgiving food essentials.
From turkey to fixins', shoppers will be digging
deeper in their pockets this year, as prices on just about everything has
skyrocketed.
According
to the American Farm Bureau Federation, with elevated food price inflation, the
cost of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner has shot up considerably after a drop
last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The AFBF puts the average cost of a Thanksgiving
feast for 10 people this year at $53, up nearly $7 from last
year.
This year, AFBF's pegged the average cost of a
16-pound bird at $23.99, or about $1.50 per pound, up 24% from 2020.
Besides turkey, the AFBF says you'll also be paying more for dinner
rolls, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie mix, sweet potatoes and veggie trays.
The pandemic, supply chain issues and a global
demand for food, particularly meat, are all contributing to the increased
prices.
