Snow removal has been put on hold in the Village of Port Chester for - at least a week.

Port Chester DPW crews, like many others across the Hudson Valley, have been busy with snow-removal efforts, which can lead to wear-and-tear of equipment.

"We had significant failure in our large loader that needs repaired," said Port Chester Village manager Stuart Rabin.

Rabin also said that their 1971 "sit-car," which is a giant rideable snowmobile is also being repaired.

The pause comes right as crew were getting ready to clear several additional residential streets. While these two pieces aren't needed when there is light snowfall, both are vital to help remove large amounts of snow and ice, especially snow mounds.

"There's like 6-foot mountains of snow out here still, and it's been over a week," said Port Chester resident Trent Plateroti.

But those mounds may not be going anywhere for a while.

"Snow mounds are a lot more resilient. If we don't agitate it, those mounds could go well into the early spring, if not the late spring," said Rabin.

Rabin said the hope is that the equipment will be back up and running by the end of next week. He's asking for residents to be patient.
