Sources say Mount Vernon High School was placed in a hold-in-place Thursday.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Waveline Bennett-Conroy said that the incident happened around 10:15 a.m. in between class periods. The superintendent said that five students at the school were involved in an altercation, with one of the students wielding a knife.
The superintendent says safety officers immediately arrived at the scene and the students were detained.
None of the students were said to have sustained serious injuries, but a teacher and safety officer suffered minor injuries.
The school was placed on a hold-in-place between 10:40 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Bennett-Conroy says that a second incident occurred during school pickup, when a verbal altercation occurred between two of the students’ relatives.
Mount Vernon police were called to intervene and de-escalate the situation.
The City of Mount Vernon released the following statement:
"The Mount Vernon Police Department wasn’t notified of a lockdown at Mount Vernon High School. However, per the request from the Mount Vernon City School District, the Mount Vernon Police Department will provide entry and dismissal police presence tomorrow Friday 2/10 and will follow up with the school superintendent for any other public safety needs or concerns throughout the weekend and into the early next week."
