You're probably seeing more butterflies as it gets warmer
outside, and in Westchester, you can take a Road
Trip: Close to Home where YOU
can spread your wings too!
Spring is a
transformative time of the year, and at Lasdon Park and Arboretum, you can get a hands-on experience of what one vital
insect goes through.
"Amazing
butterflies is an interactive experience where kids can go through and
transform into butterflies themselves," says Jessica Schuler, of Lasdon Park and Arboretum
Walk
in and weave through this interpretive maze to learn the lifecycle of a
butterfly.
The goal here is to
teach the young ones about the vital role these colorful insects play, and their relationship with the nature.
"Butterflies
are so important for our ecosystems mainly here for our nesting birds, so the
birds need those caterpillars to have babies, so everything is
interconnected," explains Schuler.
And
you're going into almost every aspect of the process through this nature-based
play space -from inching like a caterpillar, curling into a chrysalis, to
transforming and take off! Just remember to stamp your card along the
way to mark your progress.
"I hope that they will learn more fully about what it
means to be a butterfly, to live like one and get some ideas of why they're so
important and how they can protect them at home," says Schuler.
And that's not all! There is so much to explore at Lasdon with more than
230 acres of spring blooms.
The Amazing Butterflies Exhibit is open Thursday-Sundays until
