Fire officials are investigating a blaze that killed a 65-year-old Spring Valley man over the weekend.
Firefighters say apartment 9J in the Regency Village complex was completely consumed by smoke and flames when they arrived. Officials say the fire was especially heavy in the kitchen and living room. After officials cleared a substantial amount of smoke from the room, they discovered the victim.
Officials say the man may have been living in the apartment illegally. There were no batteries in the smoke detectors in the apartment. According to the fire chief, firefighters also discovered that the hydrant on Fletcher Road was unusable. The fire chief says firefighters were able to use water from a nearby truck to douse the flames.
Workers from United Water replaced the fire hydrant Monday. The Rockland County Sheriffs Arson Unit is working with the Rockland County Department of Fire and Emergency Services to investigate the cause of the fire.
