State lawmakers took the reins of the sulky for the annual legislative harness race in Yonkers.

A number of state senators and assembly members competed for bragging rights at the Yonkers Raceway.

Each race was two laps around the historic 1.5-mile oval track. Professional harness drivers sat next to each participant.

Karl Brabenec, NYS Assemblyman (98), stated, "In the first match, we beat the chair of the race in the wagering committee, and he's the outstanding champion, so this is a great victory, and we're looking forward to the next race."

The harness race created backlash and disapproval from animal rights activists in the past. Activists argue lawmakers should fund education rather than horse racing.
