New York state police confirmed an off-duty NYPD officer was the driver involved in a fatal early Sunday morning crash in Haverstraw.
The single-vehicle collision happened on the Palisades Parkway around 2:30 a.m. just south of Exit 14.
The officer was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition as of Sunday night.
Police said the passenger, 36-year-old Chevy Thomas, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Both the driver and Thomas are from Maybrook.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, a Hyundai, was traveling northbound near Exit 13, left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The SUV was split in half in the center median.
This was the second deadly accident on the Palisades Parkway in the past three days.
On Friday, a deadly accident happened southbound off of Exit 16 and police said one man was killed in that crash.
