Storm causes spike in contractor scams
The Rockland County Consumer Protection Agency is warning homeowners seeking to repair storm damage about opportunistic scammers posing as licensed contractors.
Joan O'Keefe, deputy director of the RCCPA, advises homeowners against hiring people who show up and offer services like tree removal and roof repair - legitimate contractors don't operate that way. Homeowners are urged to get as many estimates as possible and avoid paying in cash.
Experts say hiring an unlicensed or uninsured contractor can also land the homeowner in trouble.
Greg Smith, of the Rockland County Builders and Remodelers Association, says if something happens to an uninsured contractor on the job, the homeowner could be sued.
