Power outages, downed trees and dangerous road conditions greeted many Hudson Valley residents Sunday morning after powerful winds swept through the region overnight.
In Yonkers, the aftermath was especially painful for one family after a large tree crashed onto their brand-new vehicle at the intersection of Bronxville Road and Texas Avenue. The storm also snapped a utility pole in half, bringing down power lines and forcing officials to close the intersection.
“We came out and we didn’t notice it was our car at first,” said Yonkers resident Gina F. “And then someone said, ‘Who has that Kia?’ And we saw the tree in our car. Oh my God, it’s horrible. We just got this car a month ago today. It’s a brand-new car. Kind of heartbreaking to see something that you just got taken like that. ”
News 12 crews observed storm damage across several communities, including Hastings, Yonkers and Bronxville, where fallen trees, downed branches and power outages were creating hazards for residents.
One resident affected by the outages told News 12 she was concerned about refrigerated medication spoiling if power is not restored soon.
Officials are urging residents to use caution while traveling, avoid downed power lines and watch for debris on roads and sidewalks. Drivers are also encouraged to check for road closures and transportation delays before heading out.
Con Edison crews are working to restore service and clear hazardous conditions as communities across Westchester continue cleanup efforts following the storm.
