Get ready for an early taste of summer across Long Island as temperatures soar well above average through the middle of the week. For today, expect mostly sunny skies and very warm conditions from morning through late afternoon. Inland neighborhoods will climb well into the 80s, while the immediate South Shore and the East End stay a bit cooler with temperatures mainly in the 70s thanks to the ocean breeze. Overall, it’s a great beach and backyard weather day, so don’t forget the sunscreen and stay hydrated if you’re spending time outdoors.

Tonight, skies turn partly cloudy and it will remain mild for May standards. Temperatures will only fall back into the 50s and low 60s overnight, making for a warm and comfortable evening. You may even notice a little humidity beginning to build as we head toward Tuesday’s heat.
Tuesday looks like the hottest day of the stretch. Sunshine and summerlike warmth will push temperatures through the 80s across most of the island, with some lower 90s possible along the North Shore of Nassau County and into northwest Suffolk County. The East End will once again stay cooler in the 70s due to the marine influence. It will feel more humid during the afternoon, so take it easy during the peak heat if you’re outside for an extended period of time.
Wednesday stays hot with another round of 80s and 90s inland, while shoreline communities remain mainly in the 70s. We’ll be watching for late-day thunderstorms developing after about 5 p.m. as a cold front approaches from the west. Some of those storms could produce quick downpours and gusty winds before the front pushes offshore Wednesday night, finally breaking the heat. By Thursday, much cooler air moves in with partly sunny skies and highs only near 70 degrees.
Looking ahead to the Memorial Day weekend, the weather pattern appears a little unsettled with the chance for periods of wet weather at times.
