Students returned to Arlington High School for first time Monday since 16-year-old student Quraan Smith was fatally stabbed outside the building Friday.

Authorities say Poughkeepsie resident Nestor Ortiz-Ocampo, 18, is accused of stabbing Smith to death during a large fight in the school parking lot after a football game.

David Moyer, who is in his first year as the superintendent of Arlington Central School District, says, "I think it's a time where the community needs to support each other.”

On Monday, Dutchess County officers were present at the school as an added layer of security.

"The most immediate thing on our minds was ensuring that school was safe today, and any people that needed support— that support was easily available for them,” Moyer says.

A county-deployed trauma team will be helping the community at least until Wednesday.

Many students wore red and gold to school in solidarity.

Ortiz-Ocampo is expected to be back in court Thursday afternoon.

Authorities are still investigating what prompted the fight.
