The Suffern community is in mourning following a car crash that claimed the life of a teenage girl and injured four others on Saturday.
Another teenager, the driver involved in the accident, is now facing charges.
Grief counselors are on hand at Suffern High School to help students and staff deal with the tragedy.
Police say the crash occurred early Saturday morning on Route 202 in Montebello in Rockland County.
The 17-year-old driver was intoxicated, according to authorities. He's now charged with manslaughter, DWI, vehicular manslaughter and a host of other felony charges.
This latest tragedy hits close to home for Anastasia Karassik, of the Larisa Karassik Foundation. Her 13-year-old daughter Larisa was killed by a drunk driver six years ago.
Karassik routinely lectures at schools and community groups, and offers this plea to teen drivers who drink and think, "It can't happen to me."
"Drunk driving kills, it can happen to anyone, anywhere, any time," Karassik says. "I don't want your family to suffer what our family has had to suffer, leaving behind siblings, brothers and sisters, family members. When you're healthy, smart and a thriving young adult with their future ahead of them, this is the worst decision you can possibly make.”
The 17-year-old driver, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was released on his own recognizance and is due in court on Monday.
Meanwhile, Suffern High School Principal Patrick Breen released a statement that reads in part, "A student death is a difficult and a challenging situation... this is an incredibly difficult time for our community."
